Le Mans 1955 Fatal Crash

In the 1955 Le Mans race, the most catastrophic accident in racing history happened when Pierre Levegh crashed his Mercedes 300 SLR killing himself and 79 spectators. Because the car was made of magnesium alloy, it burned with an intense ferocity causing even wider damage.
